The Baton Rouge Children’s Health Project (BRCHP) was initially created as a response to the urgent pediatric health care needs in the aftermath of Hurricanes’ Katrina and Rita. The BRCHP now provides critically needed medical and mental health services to children and families impacted and/or displaced by Hurricane Katrina, in addition to other underserved children and families in the Baton Rouge area. BRCHP provides comprehensive and continuous care employing the medical home model, providing mental health services, case management, and disease prevention education. Referrals for sub-specialty and inpatient care are arranged as needed.

BRCHP’s work has transitioned from disaster-related medical care to ongoing primary care. Services are provided on a Mobile Medical Clinic (MMC), which includes two examination rooms, a nurse’s station, and waiting and registration areas. A team of dedicated clinical professionals are assigned to the MMC, providing care to sites on a regular schedule.

BRCHP also provides Mental Health services through their Community Support and Resiliency Program (CSRP). A variety of mental health services are provided on the Community Support and Resiliency Unit (CSRU), a custom-designed mobile mental health clinic. The goals of the CSRP are to assist children and families with their immediate mental health needs, provide psycho-social services, help with reintegration into their communities, and foster resilience and coping skills. The CSRP also works closely with the schools providing psychoeducational testing in collaboration with Pupil Appraisal to help direct appropriate classroom interventions for children with learning and behavioral problems which impact learning.

  • Patient education and community outreach;
  • Mental health assessments;
  • Psychoeducational testing and treatment;
  • Family, individual and group counseling;
  • Case management and Mental Health education; and
  • Referrals to subspecialty care.
