Long Island, New York

The Long Island Children’s Health Project (LICHP) provides services to children from underserved areas of Long Island’s Nassau County, including many newly immigrated families.

A majority of the patients seen by the LICHP live below the poverty level, and many of the program’s patient families are “doubling up” with several families living in one or two bedroom apartments. The program treats a high number of recent immigrants who have complex health care needs, such as asthma, iron deficiency anemia and obesity. Many children and adolescents seen by the LICHP are under-immunized and have received limited or no preventative health care. Additionally, many children come to the program with advanced dental decay and baby bottle caries.

In order to address the health care challenges faced by the community, the LICHP Project provides comprehensive primary care at The Hagedorn Family Center, an active and well known community center in Hempstead. From this location, the medical clinic acts as a hub - receiving many referrals from nearby schools, community centers, group homes and foster care agencies.

Available Services:

  • Comprehensive physical examinations and immunizations;
  • Management of acute and chronic illnesses;
  • GYN care and referrals;
  • Nutrition assessment, cholesterol screening and body weight monitoring;
  • Screenings for lead, cancer and vision and hearing testing;

  • Substance abuse assessment and referrals; and
