The San Francisco Peninsula Children's Health Project provides services to uninsured and homeless adolescents on the San Francisco Peninsula at school-linked and community-based sites.
Although there are many affluent communities on the San Francisco Peninsula, the number of homeless and uninsured youth is tragic - and it's increasing. There are an estimated 5,000 homeless adolescents in Santa Clara County, San Mateo County and San Francisco. The number of total uninsured adolescents is estimated at around 56,000.
Patients of the SFPCHP have multiple and complex medical and psychosocial issues - including malnutrition, substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, unplanned pregnancies and mental health problems. Many adolescents seen by the project are under-immunized and have received limited or no preventative health care in the past. They often have illnesses which have become severe due to delayed treatment.
By providing comprehensive primary care, without regard to ability to pay, the San Francisco Peninsula Children's Health Project is giving disadvantaged adolescents a much needed medical home.
