Keynote Fireside Chat: Child Immigrant Health

Renowned journalist Michael Hill will interview immigrant child and family health expert Dr. Raul Gutierrez about the systemic barriers and trauma child immigrants face and how these experiences, left unaddressed, increase their risk of developing lifelong medical and mental health conditions. Dr. Gutierrez has worked with immigrant children for nearly 15 years. He co-founded and co-directs the BRIDGES clinic that has a holistic and community-supported approach to wellness among the newly arrived. From interpreting for patients at a free clinic in college to working with migrant farm workers in Michigan to his current advocacy efforts, Dr. Gutierrez has always found inspiration in his abuela’s journey and carries her strength as an immigrant woman with him daily. Mr. Hill will also ask a provider from CHF’s national network to share their innovative approach to meeting the comprehensive needs of immigrant children. Panelists will recommend policies that give immigrant children the best chance to thrive and succeed while assimilating into their adopted communities around the country.

♦ The Power of Play
Why play? From the satisfaction of breaking a sweat to the surprise of imagination, play teaches us to be human. Through play, children discover the joy of physical activity, learn to regulate their emotions and manage conflict, and build the social and emotional skills they will use in the classroom, workplace, and life. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn how embracing play can dramatically improve the mental and physical well-being of the children they work with.
