WHAT WE DO

National Network

FLINT Children's Health Project

The Flint Children’s Health Project (FCHP) was formed in the wake of the 2014 Flint water crisis. The goal was to increase access to lead testing, create connections to comprehensive medical home services, and provide health education. By using a mobile medical clinic (MMC), FCHP is able to reach isolated areas of the community.

In addition, the CHF Community Support and Resiliency Unit (CSRU) and the Genesee Community Health Center–a Federally Qualified Health Center operated in partnership with Genesee Health System (GHS)–enables the program to provide case management, enhanced community outreach services, community programing, and trauma-informed cognitive behavioral therapy to individuals, groups and families. Due to the increased risk children in Flint currently face from lead exposure, counseling on the importance of nutrition, early intervention, and ongoing developmental screening and preventative services are especially important.

Additionally, GHS provides targeted case management for individuals under age 21 impacted by the lead exposure. Currently, the CSRU are being deployed at multiple Flint community schools, community events, health fairs, and water and food distribution sites around the city.

The Flint community benefits from FCHP’s ability to provide case management and mental health support at water crisis related events, regularly occurring community events and activities, as well as in local Flint schools.
